Therapy for AdopTees & Adoptive Parents
Los Angeles & Encino, CA or Virtual
Adoption is far more complex than a fairy tale or win-win-win situation. Our culture tends to romanticize adoption, but it’s a for-profit industry that’s rife with corruption.
Society tells adoptees that they should be happy and grateful, but many adoptees struggle with fear of abandonment, perfectionism, or a gnawing feeling that there's something wrong with them. Others feel they’re missing something hugely important they can’t describe. This ambiguous loss and unresolved trauma contribute to the higher rate of mental health problems for adoptees, many of whom struggle with addiction.
My understanding of the adoption constellation gives me a perspective that centers the experience of adult adoptees. I’m also thrilled to work with birth parents (or first parents), as well as adoptive parents. Adoption has its joys and rewards, but loss, trauma, and tragedy are always part of the story. I offer talk therapy sessions in person or online.
